24 Solar Terms——Beginning of Autumn

Aug 07, 2025

Beginning of Autumn, known as "Liqiu" in Chinese, is the thirteenth of the twenty-four solar terms, typically occurring between August 7th and 9th annually. It signifies the symbolic transition from the intense heat of summer towards the cooler, drier autumn season, despite the lingering warm temperatures known as the "Autumn Tiger." Traditionally, Beginning of Autumn marked a crucial period for agricultural communities, signaling the time to begin preparations for the autumn harvest while remaining vigilant about potential droughts or floods that could damage ripening crops. This solar term embodies the ancient Chinese understanding of seasonal shifts and the need to adapt agricultural activities accordingly.

Historically, Beginning of Autumn was met with significant ceremonial observances reflecting both practical concerns and reverence for the changing season. Imperial courts held grand ceremonies to "meet autumn," offering sacrifices to deities like the White Emperor (associated with autumn) to pray for a smooth seasonal transition and a bountiful harvest. Common folk engaged in customs aimed at safeguarding health and prosperity: "Weighing people" to monitor weight loss from summer and wish for health, "Touching Autumn" where women ventured into fields at night seeking fertility symbols like melons, and consuming seasonal "autumn peaches" or sticky foods like dumplings to fortify the body against the impending coolness and replenish after summer's depletion. Eating specific fruits like peaches symbolized warding off summer epidemics.

Today, Beginning of Autumn endures as a meaningful cultural marker, reminding people of nature's cycles and the importance of seasonal adjustment in a modern context. While large-scale imperial rituals have faded, folk customs like eating symbolic autumn foods persist, particularly in rural areas. Urban populations might celebrate by enjoying seasonal delicacies or simply noting the date as a reminder of the changing weather. Symbolically, it retains profound significance, emphasizing the need to respect natural timing, prepare diligently for the future, and maintain balance within one's health and life as the seasons turn. It serves as a cultural heritage point, fostering appreciation for ancestral wisdom regarding humanity's connection to the rhythms of the natural world and the importance of living in harmony with them.
